At the start of the 10th version of the most important event of the cheese industry in Tabasco, the controversy over the ownership of the brand and its image continues to grow.

It is a “battle” of registrations for the control of the celebration that is being fought within the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), where news continues to be generated around the former “Artisanal Cheese Festival”, which this Friday was inaugurated as “Fiestas del Queso” in Tenosique, with the presence of 44 producers from various states and several municipalities of the entity.

At the start of the show, it was confirmed not only that there are two registered festivals: “Artisanal Cheese Festival” (as it operated in 2023), and now the “Fiestas del Queso” (2024), but also that there is a new “legal representative” of the latter: Juan Carlos Calderón Alipi.

A few weeks before the end of the current administration, it was revealed that with a payment of 2,813 pesos, the current head of the Convention and Visitors Office (OCV) of Tabasco registered as the applicant or legal representative of the event, which generates a spill of $100 million pesos.

The ownership of the new name was received on June 4, 2024, by the Divisional Directorate of Trademarks of the IMPI, under the name or corporate name “Bancomer SA Fid Promoción Turística del Estado de Tabasco”, which would be the legal entity in charge.

TWO OWNERS AND TWO NAMES

The expo’s upheaval began last Saturday, July 20, when Tabasco HOY announced the unexpected change, both in name, logo and social networks: The “Artisanal Cheese Festival” was left behind, to make way for the “Cheese Parties”.

The change took place “overnight”. The cause, the registration of the first name by private individuals Nicteloy Guzmán García and Félix Alberto Schnabel Suárez, who by the way were also suppliers of the then Festival.

The unexpected registration of the event (apparently property of the State Government), caused the abrupt change in the image, but six years after having been registered by third parties.

This generated the launch of the second image, an intense media exchange between organizers and owners of the first brand and now the new registration.

Thus, the Tenth Cheese Festival, which will be held from August 9 to 11 at the Tenosique Convention Center, will bring together 44 exhibitors from Tabasco, Chiapas, Puebla and Veracruz, with the expected sale of more than 13 tons of cheese, as well as an attendance of more than 60 thousand people.
