Several municipalities and communities were affected by interruptions and fluctuations in the electricity supply
A major power outage surprised residents of Tabasco on Tuesday night, August 25, 2026, with partial and total interruptions reported in several areas of the state.
The first reports were concentrated in Centro, Nacajuca and Huimanguillo, although electricity problems were also reported in other municipalities.
In Villahermosa, affected areas included Centro, Tabasco 2000, Tierra Colorada, Indeco, La Isla, Guineo and Buena Vista, as well as the Villa El Cielo and La Venta developments.
Residents of Nacajuca, particularly in Pomoca and El Cedro, also reported interruptions and fluctuations in the electricity service.
Reports of power failures extended to municipalities including Cárdenas, Huimanguillo, Teapa, Jalpa de Méndez, Cunduacán, Tacotalpa, Jalapa, Macuspana, Centla, Paraíso and Comalcalco. In several locations, residents reported interruptions lasting several minutes, intermittent service and low voltage.
The lack of electricity also caused traffic-light failures in several parts of Villahermosa, affecting road circulation during the night.
Residents Block Villahermosa–La Isla Highway
The power outage generated dissatisfaction among residents, particularly in areas that remained without electricity for an extended period.
In the Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood of Villahermosa, residents blocked the Villahermosa–La Isla highway to demand that the electricity service be restored.
The protest was one of the immediate consequences of the interruption, as residents demanded a solution to the lack of electricity in their communities.
CFE Reports Damage to Transmission Infrastructure
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that the electrical supply was affected at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to preliminary information from the company, the incident was caused by the fall of a conductor cable in transmission infrastructure in Tabasco.
CFE personnel were immediately sent to the affected area to carry out the necessary work to restore the electricity supply.
The company also began operational maneuvers in coordination with the National Center for Energy Control (CENACE) to advance the recovery of the service.
Six Municipalities Reported Major Effects
According to information provided by Tabasco Governor Javier May Rodríguez, the outage significantly affected at least six municipalities in the state.
The municipalities identified as experiencing the greatest impact were Centro, Comalcalco, Jalpa de Méndez, Cunduacán, Huimanguillo and Nacajuca.
The governor estimated that approximately 180,000 families were left without electricity as a result of the incident.
May Rodríguez also said that the problem affected areas beyond Tabasco, including parts of Chiapas and the Yucatán Peninsula.
The governor initially indicated that the failure originated at a facility operated by Pemex, although CFE’s preliminary report attributed the incident to the fall of a conductor cable in transmission infrastructure.
Electricity Service Restored
CFE reported on Wednesday, August 26, that the electricity supply in Tabasco had been fully restored.
The company’s Distribution and Transmission crews worked continuously to repair the affected infrastructure and restore electricity to the communities and municipalities affected by the outage.
CFE stated that the damage to electrical infrastructure was associated with heavy rains and atmospheric electrical discharges in the state.
The company said that its personnel maintained communication and coordination with municipal and state authorities throughout the restoration process.
CFE reiterated its commitment to responding to and monitoring contingencies affecting the electricity supply.
Impact on Villahermosa and Surrounding Communities
The outage affected residential areas, communities and commercial zones in and around Villahermosa.
Among the locations reporting problems were Tabasco 2000, Tierra Colorada, Indeco, La Isla, Guineo, Buena Vista, Villa El Cielo and La Venta, while other communities reported intermittent electricity and voltage fluctuations.
The incident occurred during a period of heavy rainfall and electrical storms in the state, conditions that authorities later identified as contributing to damage to electrical infrastructure.
By Wednesday, CFE reported that the restoration work had reached 100 percent, ending the widespread interruption reported the previous night.
