Tabasco prosecutor’s office cracks down on “narco-websites,” sparking controversy over censorship

The Tabasco State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into social media pages linked to drug cartels for allegedly spreading misinformation.

Although this measure is presented as a way to combat fake news, some believe its true intention is to censor media outlets that do not adhere to the official narrative.

From the Attorney General’s Office facilities, journalist Gabriel Villanueva reported that the Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into these so-called “drug cartel pages,” which are accused of presenting false information and creating panic among the population by disseminating violent events such as executions, shootouts, and roadblocks orchestrated by organized crime.

The journalist stated that these pages lack credibility because they operate anonymously and conceal the progress made by the Tabasco government in security matters. “There are more of us who are good, and the Mexican State is fighting crime with all its power.”

“That untouchable cyberspace that once existed no longer exists; those pages that spread false information will now be able to be taken down,” Villanueva added.

Audelino Macario, a journalist and communications consultant, used his X (formerly Twitter) profile to address the issue of “narco-pages” in Tabasco. From his perspective, the Attorney General’s Office is not trying to combat disinformation, but rather to silence voices critical of the state government.

According to Macario, Governor Javier May’s administration wants to sell the idea that it is fighting organized crime and that violence has decreased in Tabasco, but social media posts contradict the official version.

“The only loose end in the official strategy is the now ‘cursed’ social media, where journalists and citizens express themselves freely, report on acts of violence that the mainstream media conceal, and contradict the narrative from the Governor’s Palace,” Audelino Macario posted.
