From January to November 2025, 83 legal abortions were performed in Tabasco at IMSS Bienestar hospitals and two more at the Tabasco State Social Security Institute (ISSET). This number surpasses the 81 abortions performed on women from Tabasco who sought treatment in Mexico City (CDMX) hospitals over the past 18 years.
According to data from the Mexico City government, between 2007, when abortion was legalized in the nation’s capital, and June of this year, public hospitals in that city reported that 82 of the women who underwent the procedure during that period indicated they resided in Tabasco.
Meanwhile, just a few months after the decriminalization of abortion in Tabasco, IMSS Bienestar and ISSET are already reporting a higher number of procedures than the number of women who traveled to Mexico City for abortions in the last 18 years.
According to data provided by IMSS Bienestar to this news outlet, in the first 11 months of 2025, 81 pregnancy terminations have been completed in public hospitals in the state, while ISSET reports that in the same period, it has performed 2 pregnancy terminations, bringing the total to 83 cases in just the months of this year, which is not yet over.
Data from the federal health agency shows that these procedures have been performed in 10 hospitals under the IMSS Bienestar network in Tabasco. The Community Hospital of Frontera stands out, where 30 pregnant women exercised their right to terminate their pregnancies, followed by 13 more procedures performed at the General Hospital of Balancán, and another 13 cases at the Rovirosa Hospital in the Tabasco state capital.
Meanwhile, only one procedure has been recorded in each of the hospitals in Jalpa de Méndez, Huimanguillo, and Tacotalpa.
In total, during the first 11 months of the year, 81 abortions have been performed in hospitals run by the IMSS Bienestar program, a higher number than the 67 reported by the health agency in 2024, when the Frontera Community Hospital led the way with 44 cases. The ISSET (State Social Security Institute) reported two more cases at its facilities during 2025.
In mid-May of this year, the state Congress approved the decriminalization of abortion up to 12 weeks of gestation, after which women who decide to terminate their pregnancy for any reason can do so in the state’s public hospitals.
