The Mexican government has announced plans to relocate migrant assistance centers from Nuevo León and Nuevo Laredo to Villahermosa, Tabasco, and Tapachula, Chiapas, as part of a new strategy to support Mexicans repatriated from the United States.
Under this plan, Warehouse 3 of Tabasco Park in Villahermosa will be converted into an assistance center for Mexican migrants deported from the US. The facility is expected to provide financial support and transportation assistance to help migrants return to their places of origin.
According to Governor Javier May Rodríguez, deported migrants are expected to arrive by plane at Villahermosa Airport and then be taken to Warehouse 3, where they will receive assistance. The building is a spacious, air-conditioned facility located in a well-connected area of the city.
The head of the Federal Government’s Welfare Secretariat, Ariadna Montiel, confirmed that migrants will receive financial support of 2,000 pesos to cover their expenses upon arrival in Mexico and transportation support by plane or bus to return to their places of origin. They will also be eligible for enrollment in the Welfare Secretariat’s programs.
The federal government has decided to relocate the migrant care centers as part of a new strategy to support deported migrants following the hardening of President Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant stance after protests in Los Angeles, California.
The decision to send deported migrants to Villahermosa is intended to allow for the transfer of these individuals to various parts of the country. Tabasco has historically had fewer citizens living and working in the US compared to other states, but many residents travel to the US for seasonal work.
