Pollution in Paraíso is already a political problem

The environmental pollution caused by the Olmeca refinery in the municipal capital and in the coastal area of Paraíso threatens to become a political-ecological scandal of dimensions that are not yet visualized, if a risk agenda is not built to contain the media campaign that has been initiated by a national television station that is not TV Azteca.

In this space, we have discussed on several occasions the environmental phenomenon that impacts air quality on the coasts of Cárdenas and Paraíso, and that extends to Villahermosa, according to an environmental study shown to me by a Tabasco company that covers the activities carried out by Pemex in the land and marine area of Tabasco.

I insisted on the issue by recalling that, on March 26, 2025, the director-general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned the world that air pollution is “one of the greatest health threats; For many people, the air they breathe is a cause of death.” I recalled that environmental organizations and NGOs have warned about the serious pollution generated by Pemex in the air, water, soil, and the marine platform where it carries out its activities in Tabasco.

The fact is that the environmental contingency generated by the Olmeca refinery has already surpassed the municipal authorities of Paraíso, which have shown an inability to attend to parents who denounced to a national television station, with a large presence in the United States, that their children have health effects due to attending schools located within the perimeter of the oil facilities daily.

Likewise, families from the Petrolera colony denounced that the constant burning of gas carried out by the refinery, both day and night, emits methane, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and monoxide, among other gases, into the atmosphere, which can cause diseases such as cancer, leukemia, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as neurological problems.

The fact is that what remains of the opposition will take advantage of this scenario to further disqualify the flagship work of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and use it as a political battering ram for electoral purposes, with the aim of snatching, at least, the qualified majority from Morena in the federal Chamber of Deputies, as well as disputing several governorships.
