From May 2019 to the present, the Tabasco State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has opened 159 investigations into animal abuse in Tabasco.

Gilberto Melquiades Miranda Díaz, Deputy Attorney General for Common Crimes at the FGE, revealed that from 2019, when animal cruelty was criminalized in the state, until 2024, only one arrest warrant was issued. However, in 2025, there have been five cases, with three arrests made.

He stated that more warrants are now being issued because they are acting on their own initiative based on cases reported on social media and in the news.

“It’s important to mention here that this crime has gained significant prominence, especially in 2025. It has become a widely discussed topic in the media and on social networks, and it has clearly gained momentum. Previously, an investigation was only opened if someone reported the incident to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Now, however, simply seeing it in the media or on social networks obligates the Public Prosecutor’s Office to initiate an investigation,” she stated.

Miranda Díaz highlighted that in 2025 alone, 64 investigations have been opened for animal abuse, representing 67 percent of the 95 complaints received in the previous five years.

“This year we have around 64 investigations underway. That means that from 2019 to 2024—we’re talking about roughly five years—we’ve almost reached half the number of investigations initiated this year, 2025. We no longer wait for someone to come to the Justice Center to report a crime of this nature; we initiate an investigation as soon as we become aware of it in any way,” he commented.

Finally, he stated that there is currently more interest in animal welfare and that they respect animals as living beings. He also dismissed the idea that filing a complaint is complicated, since the Public Prosecutor’s Office has the obligation to initiate an investigation ex officio.
