Road chaos in Tabasco is caused by various factors, including violence, blockades, and poorly maintained roads. Here are the key issues contributing to the problem:
Blockades
Frequent blockades in streets and highways due to citizen protests demanding government action on social issues, better service from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), and labor improvements lead to significant road congestion.
Poor Road Conditions
Villahermosa’s streets are in disrepair, posing dangers to citizens and giving the city a bad appearance, especially in historic areas. Roads like Arista Street, Paseo Tabasco Avenue, and Adolfo Ruiz Cortines Boulevard are full of potholes. Previous municipal administrations only improved certain areas, leaving many roads neglected. This forced motorists to drive slowly. The current municipal government, led by Yolanda Osuna Huerta, is working on road improvements, including hydraulic concrete placement at various points in the city.
Road Design
Safe street and road design are crucial. The Mexican government’s “Decade of Action for Road Safety” emphasizes the need for safer road designs and independent road safety audits. Proper road design is linked to vehicle flow, and neglecting this aspect can lead to traffic chaos.
Public Transport and Vehicle Increase
Heavy traffic is also caused by increased demand for public transport and road traffic. Economic improvements and greater access to credit have made cars more accessible, leading to more vehicles on the streets.
Violence
Violence is another major cause of road congestion. A recent armed attack on the Villahermosa-La Isla highway on February 2, 2025, resulted in one death and two injuries, along with the presence of tire-puncturing devices. On January 14, human remains were found in bags on the Villahermosa-Teapa highway, leading to police and military operations and heavy traffic.
These factors highlight the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address road chaos in Tabasco.
