The President of the United States contacted AMLO to notify him of the availability of devices and that these will have no restrictions for Mexico.

The United States will sell to the government of Mexico at least 1,000 medical ventilators to attend the health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reported through his social networks this Friday.

AMLO indicated that his US counterpart Donald Trump contacted him to notify him of the availability of devices and that these will have no restrictions for Mexico.

“He guaranteed me that by the end of this month we will have 1,000 and we will be able to acquire others because our country has no restrictions on the purchase of equipment from the United States,” López Obrador said on the social network.

A week ago, on April 9, López Obrador asked Trump to sell 10,000 ventilators and 10,000 monitors to tackle the COVID-19 epidemic.

López Obrador described what Trump reported as a “new gesture of solidarity with Mexico” and proposed that he meet in June or July to personally express his gratitude and bear witness to the entry into force of the new Free Trade Agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).

The way in which President López Obrador has handled the health crisis has been criticized for his reluctance to paralyze activities. The lack of supplies for the hospitals and their quality have earned him a series of criticisms.

On Thursday it was announced that the stay at home order will last until May 30, one month more than previously agreed. Although due to the low or no transmission of the virus in some municipalities, the health security measures in those territories will remain until May 17.

“We are anticipating Phase 3. Technically we are not in Phase 3 in a generalized way,” they explained, although they specified that there has been no equitable increase in cases of contagion in the different areas and municipalities of the country, so there is no generality throughout the country, reported the undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell.

“On May 8 and 10 we will have the greatest affectation due to coronavirus,” the president acknowledged this Friday from the National Palace in his traditional press conference.

“We have to be complete,” he added when requesting the help of nurses and doctors of 60 and 65 years to strengthen the health sector during the next month.

The doctors who accept must be healthy and would not be in contact with COVID patients, nor in pandemic care sections, they would reinforce other sectors of Health so as not to neglect the rest of the population.

A table published by the director of the Western Hemisphere of the International Monetary Fund, Alejandro Werner, shows that the package of available resources announced by Mexico is equivalent to less than one percent of gross domestic product. This compares to spending commitments of approximately 12% of GDP in Peru and more than 10% in Brazil.

The attempts of the Mexican authorities to hire more doctors in the country have caused in recent days some crowds in front of the hiring offices, violating the restrictions of social distancing imposed by the Ministry of Health.

The Government has been questioned about the lack of supplies of protective equipment for hospital workers, especially as a result of several cases of outbreaks of the virus in at least three hospitals with dozens of infected medical workers.

Mexican authorities reported on Thursday 6,297 infected and 486 deaths from the coronavirus, which in the world has left more than 2.1 million infected and more than 143,000 deaths.
